Welcome to Footfalls
One of the earliest things we learn as human beings is rhythm. We sing as children, we play games that involve actions repeated over and over; and we unknowingly tap our feet or nod our heads to the music we hear. The world around us is involved in the same rhythm, the seasons repeating in the same yearly cycle, while plants and trees blossom and grown in their permitted time – the winters in between are only a small breath before another growing season.
In the same way, we dislike anything that falls outside a natural rhythm. An awkward beat or a poorly-arranged note causes us to cringe and turn away from the songs we enjoyed only moments before. So too, do we cringe when the world’s natural rhythm is disrupted.
In our own personal lives, we encounter rhythm in everything we do, from our sleeping patterns to our meals, raising children, and embarking on new journeys. Just as we dislike a disharmony, we also hope that when a new pattern in our lives begins, the rest of our experience can fall easily into that rhythm.
Consider this the next time you are walking, and notice the rhythm that you fall into with each step you take. And try to notice the feeling you get when the ground reaches up to meet your feet. Is it really possible to imagine the ground failing to meet your rhythm, missing your feet, and causing you to fall?
That’s because each time you take a step, you expect something to meet your foot when you set it down. The same expectation is there when you take your second step and every step thereafter. Not only is a footfall the ground underneath your lifted foot, but it is also a measure of how far you can walk, because you can only go as far as there is earth to meet your feet.
The same is true of this website. You are taking your first steps into a world of growth and education, and expect there to be something there when you set your foot down. We have built this website with that idea in mind. We hope it will be the ground that meets your first footfall.
